On October 1st, 2025, NutriCare Consultants conducted a dynamic training session for market peer leaders at Lizulu Market, as part of our capacity-building program aimed at enhancing nutrition awareness. The session focused on Nutrition Basics, empowering peer leaders to educate fellow traders and customers about the importance of a balanced diet and proper food groups.
The 14 peer leaders (including 5 women) participated in an interactive session, where key topics like the six essential food groups were introduced:
- Staples (Zokhutisa) – Maize, rice, cassava, sorghum, and potatoes.
- Meat Protein (Zanyama) – Beef, chicken, fish, eggs.
- Pulses/Legumes (Zanyemba) – Beans, groundnuts, lentils.
- Vegetables (Zamasamba) – Kale, spinach, cabbage, pumpkin leaves.
- Fruits (Zipatso) – Mangoes, bananas, oranges, guavas.
Fats & Oils (Zamafuta) – Cooking oil, groundnuts, avocados

Through role play and brainstorming activities, the session ensured that peer trainers could easily relate the nutrition concepts to their everyday lives and market environments. The interactive, Chichewa-based delivery made learning accessible and fun for all participants.
Key Highlights:
- Balanced Diets: Emphasis was placed on combining foods from all six groups in the right proportions for optimal health.
- Practical Application: Peer leaders were encouraged to share local meal planning strategies using affordable and available ingredients.
Peer-to-Peer Learning: A recap of previous hygiene training (handwashing and safe water storage) was facilitated by volunteers, reinforcing the importance of proper hygiene alongside nutrition

Looking Ahead:
NutriCare continues to support Lizulu Market’s peer leaders, ensuring they have the resources and skills needed to spread healthy eating habits. The next session will build on this foundation, diving deeper into practical nutrition applications for traders and customers alike.
